Verses 1 & 2, were written by an anonymous author, Some sources show the author as Martin Luther; this attribution (probably incorrect) is based on the title ‘Luther’s Cradle Hymn,’ given to these words by the composer, James Murray. Verse 3 is by John Thomas McFarland (1851-1913).

Thanks to Richard W. Adams for doing this research.

‘Mueller,’ James R. Murray, 1887

Lyrics:

[G] Away in a manger, no [C] crib for a [G] bed,

Away in a Manger (6)

Away in a Manger (7)

The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet [D] head.

Away in a Manger (9)

The [G] stars in the sky looked [C] down where He [G] lay,

Away in a Manger (10)

Away in a Manger (11)

The [G] little Lord Jesus, [D] asleep on the [G] hay.

Away in a Manger (12)

Away in a Manger (13)

The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes,

Away in a Manger (15)

But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes;

Away in a Manger (16)

Away in a Manger (17)

I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky

Away in a Manger (18)

Away in a Manger (19)

And stay by my cradle til morning is nigh.

Away in a Manger (20)

Away in a Manger (21)

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay

Away in a Manger (22)

Close by me forever, and love me, I pray;

Away in a Manger (24)

Away in a Manger (25)

Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,

Away in a Manger (27)

And take us to heaven to live with Thee there.
